There are a number of problems associated with the aquaculture of prawns. Prawn farming is an intensive process and consequently great care is required to produce good quality prawns in high yield. Some of the problems in prawn farms are:-

• Poor water quality
• Reduction in dissolved oxygen
• Excessive sludge buildup
• Poor feed conversion ratio (FCR)
• High mortality
• Longer growth cycles
• Pond preparation
• Disposal of septic sludge

During cultivation, the prawns produce large quantities of excreta. In addition, a large quantity of food remains unconsumed. As this organic material degrades it releases ammonia and sulphides into the water. Ammonia is quite toxic to prawns and if allowed to accumulate it can result in a total kill. The sulphides are released from the anaerobic degradation of the bottom sludge and they remove the dissolved oxygen in the water which is essential for the prawns to breathe. As ammonia and sulphides increase in the water it results in increased stress on the prawns. Under these conditions the prawns are more prone to disease, higher mortality and yields are reduced.
